The Best Party Food for Your Cinco de Mayo Fiesta
Local Staples
A Cinco De Mayo party in Memphis isn’t complete without the local staples many Memphians have come to love. Of course, we’re talking about Pancho’s or Arbo’s delectable cheese dips or salsas, the delicious pico de gallo, guacamole, and chips from Las Delicias. Plus, don’t forget to include some local cervezas on your grocery list. Beers such as Crosstown Brewery’s Lawn Chair Lager or High Cotton’s own Mexican Lager will pair nicely with your local spread. You can conveniently grab all these items and more local Mexican fare from South Point Grocery. These items may be convenient, but they will surely delight your guests!
The Mexican Charcuterie Board
Charcuterie boards are all the rage, and you can easily change things up to put a Mexican spin on your board. Instead of the crackers and jams, swap them with chips and dips, and substitute salami and prosciutto with meats like carne asada, chicken, or beef. Include tortillas, Mexican cheese (queso fresco or cotija), tomatoes, shredded lettuce, jalapenos, black olives, sour cream, bell peppers, and anything else your guests might enjoy on a small taco or fajita. To make your board a little fancier, you can find specialty peppers and sauces at South Point Grocery, along with fresh produce.
Create a Classic Mexican Dessert for a Sweet Treat
Fulfill your every flan-tasy with an easy-to-make savory cream cheese flan. Here is one of our favorite recipes for flan. Don’t worry, there are only five ingredients, and you don’t have to drive far from downtown to find them.
You’ll only need the following ingredients:
- 2 cups of sugar
- 1 can of evaporated milk
- 1 pkg of softened cream cheese
- 5 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla
Heat your oven to 350 F and cook one cup of the sugar in a small saucepan on medium heat until melted and golden brown. Make sure to stir consistently. Pour this into a 9-inch round pan to evenly cover the bottom with the syrup. Next, blend the milk and cream cheese in a blender and add the remaining sugar, eggs, and vanilla. Pour this sauce over the syrup and then place the filled pan into a larger pan; add enough hot water to the larger pan, so it comes halfway up the side of the small pan. Bake for 50 minutes and then cool slightly. Carefully remove the flan from the water and refrigerate until it is chilled. Unmold onto the plate as you are serving, and voila! You’ve created a classic Mexican dessert that is sure to impress!
