Celebrate International Women’s Day with These Local Woman-Owned Brands

March 8th is International Women’s Day, and we’re celebrating by shining a spotlight on the talented and persevering women in Memphis, who have worked hard to bring their recipes to everyone’s tables. From beloved classics to new favorites, our shelves are packed with the tastiest women-owned brands. Check out a few of our favorites and discover some new local businesses along the way!

Elise Dessert Co.

Fresh ingredients and creative recipes make Elise Dessert Co. puddings undeniably delicious. Flavors range from classic banana pudding and cookies and cream to unique biscoff and golden caramel cookie puddings. Our favorite has to be the strawberry crunch pudding, which tastes exactly like a creamy strawberry ice cream crunch bar.

Bria Walls, the woman behind the pudding, comes from a long line of entrepreneurs. When she first made banana pudding for her husband, he said it was so good that she should sell it. With business in her blood and armed with delicious recipes, Walls founded Elise Dessert Co. to share her melt-in-your-mouth pudding with the Memphis community.

My Cup of Tea

This small business located in Orange Mound is run by women in the community that have lived in or around poverty their entire lives. By learning how to package, distribute, and sell teas from My Cup of Tea, these ladies have an opportunity to learn job skills and build a community while working.

To top it all off, the teas are delicious. The packaging is resealable and airtight to keep tea fresh and extra flavorful. Popular flavors include “Memphis After Dark,” which is a decadent chocolate mint rooibos that tastes like a smooth mousse cake. Feeling something lighter? “Orange Mound Porch Peach” is a summery tea that tastes like fresh fruit on a hot summer day. Who knew tea could hold such an amazing story?

Oh Grate!

Have you ever had a long day and wondered how you were going to muster up the energy to cook dinner? So have moms Courtney Jones and Amy Bingham. That’s why they started making homemade, grab-and-go meals that you can cook at home to simplify your life.

Recipes include staples such as meatballs and marinara or chicken pot pie. But Oh Grate! doesn’t skip sides or dessert, and neither do we. Classic yeast rolls and twice mashed potatoes make excellent accompaniments to your meal, and chocolate chess pie or four layer delight will be a sweet ending on the night. Having a home-cooked dinner has never been easier.

Kaye’s Pints and Scoops

Speaking of sweets, we can’t talk about woman-owned businesses in Memphis without mentioning the iconic Kaye’s Pints and Scoops. What started as a way for Kaye to cheer up her family with homemade ice cream has blossomed into a full creamery. With so much care put into sourcing fresh ingredients and perfecting her recipes, it’s no wonder that Kaye’s ice cream became a Memphis hit.

Stocking Kaye’s ice cream at South Point Grocery means that you can pick up a pint for any occasion. Stop by and grab a pint of ‘Strawberry Fields”–fresh strawberries and cream– before a picnic by the river. Or pick up a pint of “Chocolate Brownie” as a part of your movie night at home. No matter the occasion, Kaye’s pints are a tasty addition.

Later this month, join us on March 22 at 12-2 p.m. for a free tasting of some of our favorite brands in Memphis. We’ll be kicking off our live music series on the patio with Jesse Wilcox, so there is plenty to celebrate! More details: Patio Music Series Kickoff Party with Jesse Wilcox
